While small rain barrels aren't great for large gutters, they do work well for those back porch overhangs and other small-gutter areas, which is what we did with our 60 gallon rain barrel that I custom-painted. It was situated adjacent to our herb garden and a perfect distance between our larger cisterns in the front and back. And yes, our old farm dog she loved the cool space next to it on warm summer days :)
