Oh hallelujah, my first tree mallow here in the Valley is in bloom! While I've long been in love with mallows, from the native checkermallow I called the ducks' 'salad bar' when they were little ones to the one that took over the front yard in our little cottage in Seattle (which we do have a copy of here as well), this Bredon Springs variety is supposed to hit 6' in height, and was one that I'd passed a bunch of times in temptation, then finally crept back at the last minute in the fall to pop in the ground at the last minute....only to nearly lose it in the ice cold crazy winter where the single digits threatened several of my treasured plants, even when covered in burlap. This sweetheart was just a couple of tiny green bits sticking out of the ground after winter's destruction, then took on far too many aphids, but just like my own story? She's coming out stronger, and surprising the naysayers. Six feet tall? Nope - or not yet, at least - but a gorgeous sight when entering the front gate? She's definitely going to be hitting that mark as summer gets into full gear...
