My Planet: Kulshan Trail, Skagit Valley, Washington

Finding those quiet places closer to home makes all the difference in the world. Originally explored by my husband when we first moved in last year, it's become a respite from the sounds of a bustling neighborhood, where trees insulate the sounds of cars, where the sights and sounds of birds and bugs and plants and a seasonal creek give calm, and where you wouldn't know that one end point is a ReStore parking lot and it runs parallel to a chicken processing plant. A former logging road, it's named for the original indigenous name of Mount Baker, Komo Kulshan, and I'm so grateful it welcomes me any time of year.
