While many of us are drawn to whatever plants have the prettiest flowers when we are at the plant nurseries, the purplish leaves of the American Hazelnut, aptly titled "Purpleleaf", repeatedly drew me back to it, and the sheer adaptability of it was impossible to resist.
Full sun or full shade, wet feet or drought tolerant, and the ability to grow 8' tall along our fenceline (one that is in shade in fall/winter and gets to nearly full sun by summer, so, um, perfect...), my husband was taking a closer look at it the other day and beckoned me to come over and check out the 'blooms' hiding under several of the leaves.
So. Darn. Cool.
Okay first this I'll call out that is something I totally love about my husband, a horticulturist at heart who shares my endless fascination with plants and has always supported my garden design and experimentation with new plants over the years, and second, this means that yeah, maybe our Fruit Forest extends all the way down the fenceline to add some NUTS to the mix! Here I was hoping to just not kill it, and now it's actually got potential to produce? Right on.
