This year did not turn out well for my potted tarragon. And because it dies all the way back to the ground in winter, I decided not to try to fit it into the existing herb garden until I got a better idea of how everything would grow in. So when I discovered there was a good - and lovely! - substitute for it in Mexican Marigold, AKA Mexican Tarragon or Sweet Mace, I snapped it up.
The leaves were also historically used by the Aztecs with cocoa beans to flavor xocolatl (chocolatl), but are recommended to eat only in small amounts. It is a crapshoot whether it'll survive winter, being it goes to zone 8 (which we are at, technically, but last winter we got into zone 7 temps several times unfortunately...), however it's so pretty I thought I'd give it a try and add some color to our existing herb garden!
