Well, I do have my first bell pepper, but it is neither the large size nor the earlier-than-normal harvest that was promised on the tag for any of the locally grown "Ace" organic starts I picked up this spring. Pretty? Yes. Unsatisfying in size and just two peppers on the plant? That too.
One thing I did learn for the first time in my gardening life is that if your pepper plants start to blossom before reaching 12" in height, you should pinch off those blossoms so they can focus on getting to maturity before they begin the fruiting process. These plants this year? Only a couple even are at tnormal height here as we hit the end of August. As I've mentioned in earlier posts, we got some shite soil and it was not retaining moisture worth a damn, so next year I'm much more optimistic about our chances using the homemade soil I've made for our fall and winter veg. But dang, after skipping most of the garden last year in preparation for moving? It's been a real bummer to see such weak plants and undersized veg coming up in this department.
There are good bits of news in other parts of our garden though, so I'll focus on that in my next harvest post!
