Are these the most gorgeous currants or what? Sweet and a little tangy and elegant as can be, this pink currant was one of my very first purchases when we moved here to create our Fruit Forest! Sure we have other varieties but I must say, for elegance this is definitely the one, and after this first harvest I am going to be diligent about harvesting before the local birds discover this treat!
Currants are a great 'under story' fruit for the garden because they can deal with part shade along with full sun - so basically, perfect to come into bloom at the same time as the fruit trees looming overhead yet just fine fruiting in early summer when the nearby apple and cherry trees begin to create more shade. This one is also self-fertile, only grows to a max of 5' tall, and can take temps well below zero. Perfection!
Here's a view of the vine as I await the next batch to get to that nice pearlescent pink for picking...
