DIY Skincare: Calendula Body Butter

I promised myself when our last jug of body lotion was empty, I was NOT going to buy any more of these giant plastic jugs. Beyond my contact lens solution and prescription bottles - two things I can't control what it comes in - it was the only plastic-packaged product we had left in our bathroom!

One of the things about making your own body butters/lotions/oils is finding ingredients that don't come in plastic packaging either! Kind of useless claiming the title of 'plastic free' in your house if the ingredients to make things actually come in plastic, so in our small town things like shea butter and cocoa butter, among others, are not available in truly recyclable packaging, but upon doing some homework, I found some "Pinspiration" here for a number of things to do with Calendula flowers, in particular her crazy easy recipe for a coconut oil based body oil/butter with infused calendula.

In our garden, I have always planted calendula as a companion plant and never thought much of it, but after noticing it in recent years as a primary ingredient with anti-inflammatory properties, particularly when it comes to skincare. Dry a handful, infuse it in organic coconut oil in a double-boiler inspired setup (pop it in a canning jar in a saucepan on low filled partway with water and simmer it for a few hours, basically), then whip it up with a hand mixer and...that's it!

With my husband's eczema and my post-menopausal skin dryness, this has been a great addition to our skincare routine, not to mention replacing his prior tallow-based DIY body butter with a vegan alternative. And yep...no plastic!
