Columbine “Red & White"

Easily one of my favorites to buy over and over and over at the nursery? The columbine. Every variety is gorgeous in it’s own way, and this small-but-mighty first bloom on one of ours near the fruit trees is no exception. I’m working on developing an ‘understory’ for the fruit trees - plants that attract pollinators, contribute to the soil health, and slowly but surely create coverage beyond the existing mulch.. Five or six different varieties of columbines were first, and now I’m going to get things like yarrow and chives and mint and perhaps some more bee balm to go nuts under them as well. It’s been a heavy week for me with a lot on my mind so to come out and do my daily walk around the garden with my love? It’s a delight...

“It's so curious: one can resist tears and 'behave' very well in the hardest hours of grief. But then...one notices that a flower that was in bud only yesterday has suddenly blossomed...and everything collapses. ” ~ Colette
